Misconceptions

Biodegradability is often taken to mean compostable, this is not always the case. Currently available “bio degradable” bags made from oxo-bio degradables are mistakenly understood to be environmentally friendly. They consist of standard petrochemical plastic with an accelerant added to enable fragmentation leaving “persistent residue” (see SPI’s Bioplastics Council ,Position Paper on Oxo-Biodegradables and Other Degradable Additives). We at Littlefoot encourage the use of materials that are what they say they are.

Concerns are often expressed about whether or not bioplastic materials will disintergrate in “the kitchen cupboard”. The simple answer is no. In order for compostable bioplastic to break down it needs to be subject to the action of naturally occurring micro-organisms and humidity. The circumstances that are found in composting sites.

Many food producers initial question regards shelf-life; in many applications a shelf life of up to one year can be achieved and again all materials are compliant with European and American food safety standards.
